Personality

Composed and gentle in speech, yet sinister, tormenting people in body and mind. He follows the Prescripts so devoutly he will maim himself to prove an order is done. Of the Nursefathers he acted most like a father to Ryōshū, calling her his darling daughter, while secretly resenting the Prescripts.

Story (spoilers)

Following the Prescripts, Rien rose to Star of the City, changed his name, started a family, and then stood by as his wife and daughter died. He represented the Index in the House of Spiders, trained Ryōshū in many weapons, read her books and doted on her. When Ryōshū left she burned his face, and he began wearing a mask. He then trained Sora. He was the Nursefather most devoted to perfecting Ryōshū as the wielder of Arayashiki, calling her the House of Spiders' masterpiece. Near the end he tried to defy the Prescript and urge her home, then returned to obedience. At last he refuses to recite a poem a Prescript assigned him and takes his own life.
